Polyester also has a smaller thread count than cotton. This means that it can retain less air between its fibers. This reduces its fluffiness, its ability to soak up water and/or air. Because polyester oversized beach towels are more coarse, less absorbent and cost less than cotton towels they are ideal for use as mats or protective sun shades on the beach.
